Each year, a jury selects the best Swedish picture book published over the past 12 months. The prize is awarded to raise awareness of the picture book as an artistic medium. The award is presented in March during Littfest, the Umeå International Literature Festival, in conjunction with which Bildmuseet opens an exhibition of sketches and original illustrations from the winning picture book.
The annual Swedish Picture Book of the Year exhibition is produced by Bildmuseet. It includes activities and school programmes in the creative workshop for visitors of all ages.
The Snöbollen award is instituted by Krumelur – the association for young words in the north, the Pilgatan Cultural Association, County Library of Västerbotten, Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival, the Association of Swedish Illustrators and Graphic Designers, Umeå Municipality, and Bildmuseet.
