Swedish Picture Book of the Year

2018-03-16 to 2018-09-09

What do you do when it feels impossible to measure up to everything that is expected from you? What do you do when you carry a longing for something that you can hardly put into words?

Fågeln i mig flyger vart den vill [The Bird Within Flies Wherever It Wants] tells the story about Berta Hansson, artist-to-be, and her youth in a small Jamtlandic village at the beginning of the 20th century. The book has been named the Swedish picture book of the year 2017, and was honoured with the national award Snöbollen [The Snowball]. Sara Lundberg, artist as well as author, received the award in March 2018 during Littfest, Umeå International Literature Festival. Bildmuseet presents an exhibition with  Sara Lundberg's original paintings and preparatory sketches for the book. Fågeln i mig flyger vart den vill also won the August Prize in 2017.

The prize is an initiative by the association Krumelur - Association for Young Words in the North, in cooperation with Umeå Kultur, Kulturföreningen Pilgatan, Bildmuseet, Umeå University, the county library of Västerbotten, Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival, Mid Sweden University and the Association of Swedish Illustrators and Graphic Designers.
