Black holes, dark matter, gravity, space, time and motion - these are phenomena that fascinate scientists and artists alike. Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination is dedicated to works by contemporary artists and designers inspired by the science that reveals the fundamental forces that shape our world.
Participating artists are Julius von Bismarck (Germany), Julian Charrière (Switzerland), Sou Fujimoto (Japan), Iris van Herpen (Netherlands), Ryoji Ikeda (Japan, France), William Kentridge (South Africa), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (Canada), Goshka Macuga (Poland, UK), Davide Quayola (Italy, UK), Solveig Settemsdal (Norway, UK), Sarah Sze (US), Keith Tyson (UK), Jorinde Voigt (Germany), and Carey Young (US, UK).
Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination is produced by Bildmuseet and curated in collaboration with Ariane Koek, founder of the Arts at CERN programme at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. A number of the internationally recognised artists represented in the exhibition have participated in this programme, and some of the works have been created especially for the Bildmuseet exhibition.
Entangle is accompanied by a lecture series and an audio cloud where physicists and artists reflect on Matter, Light, Gravity, Time, and Space. An exhibition catalogue will be published during the spring, including texts by the physicist and best-selling author Carlo Rovelli, the art historian Gavin Parkinson, popular science writer Philip Ball, scientists, participating artists and curator Ariane Koek.
The exhibition Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination is accompanied by an audio cloud where five of the artists reflect on Light, Gravity, Matter, Time, and Spaceside by side with physicists from CERN and Harvard University on the same phenomena.
It's in the gaps as well as the connections between their individual reflections and different ways of knowing reality that the imagination grows and the creative process happens.
In each of the tracks you will hear separately recorded reflections by one physicist then followed by one artist on the same phenomena. The artist will also refer to one of their exhibits in the show. You are welcome to listen to the tracks via your smartphone in the exhibition here at Bildmuseet and you can borrow headphones from the reception desk if you don't have your own. You can also listen at home via your computer.
With thanks to all the artists and physicists who generously gave their time and expertise. The audio cloud was produced by Whistledown. Producers were Nathan Gower and Ariane Koek.
