Illustration of Umeå Arts Campus produced by White Architects, 2010-2011.
In the spring of 2012 Bildmuseet will move to a new building situated on Umeå Arts Campus by the Umeå river. The new Bildmuseet, a seven-story building, which is now under construction, is expected to be completed in December 2011.
The transformation of the area around Umeå Institute of Design and Umeå Academy of Fine Arts started in 2009. The first new building to be constructed was the Umeå School of Architecture, which opened in September 2010. The new Arts Campus will act as a cohesive platform for education, public exhibitions, research and professional activities in the fields of architecture, design, art and digital culture. The campus will also play an important role in Umeå’s European Capital of Culture 2014 venture.
The new campus will provide a business incubator to help entrepreneurs in the creative industries and promote entrepreneurship by providing active and customized business support, office services, technical and commercial networks, and financial support.
The Umeå Arts Campus is a result of the collaboration between Umeå University and the developer Balticgruppen Design AB. The new buildings are designed by Henning Larsen Architects, together with White Architects.
Architectural sketches, floor plans and a model of the new campus is presented in an exhibition at Bildmuseet.
