Umeå Institute of Design / Degree Exhibition 2004

The Umeå Institute of Design Degree Exhibition opens, this year for the first time at Bildmuseet. The exhibition contains 33 projects representing bachelors and masters degree in industrial design.

Initially each student have articulated a problem definition. A structured design process with careful user studies, design and evaluation of a number of concepts has resulted in a final design proposal in the shape of a presentation model. The exhibition covers a broad range of products spanning across various professional situations, household environments, leisure activities and vehicle concepts. The projects have been conducted in collaboration with various organizations and companies.

During ten weeks 12 students in their last year of the bachelors program have done their final projects for a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design. The 21 students in the second year on the masters programs have spent 20 weeks doing their final projects for a Masters Degree in Advanced Product Design, Interaction Design and Transportation Design.

The Institute of Design, Umeå University, offers a three year long bachelors industrial design education as well as three two-year master programs; Advanced Product Design, Interaction Design and Transportation Design, all taught in English. Each year 14 students are accepted for the bachelors program and ten students in each of the masters programs. This year 90 students from 13 different countries have been studying at the school. Additionally to the design program students, the Institute of Design gives shorter design oriented courses to approximately 250 students from other departments of Umeå University.
