Graffiti

2003-05-04 to 2003-05-18

A group of experienced graffiti artists from across Sweden – Ruskig, Daniel Diaz, Hotel, Plåster, Ångest and Ape – have created murals in the large rooms of Bildmuseet. The results highlight the diversity of graffiti culture. Some of the invited graffiti artists have gone on to higher art education and are now active within various cultural fields. They have all been invited by the artist Roger Talik, who graduated from Umeå Academy of Fine Arts in 2002 and is the exhibition’s coordinator.

The exhibition also features photographic material and slideshows compiled by Malcolm Jacobson, photographer and author of the book They Call Us Vandals: Swedish Graffiti. In a specially-constructed labyrinth of chipboard outside the museum building – a work by Pärra Andreasson – visitors can try their hand at graffiti painting. School groups can book tours and artist-led workshops on painting and screen printing on T-shirts.

Exhibition and programme activities are being carried out in collaboration with Umeå Kultur’s ‘Culture Lifts Umeå’ initiative. During the exhibition period, there will be a debate forum on graffiti at www.vk.se in collaboration with the Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

Co-organisers: Film i Västerbotten, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, Galaxen Youth Centre in Umeå, Studiefrämjandet, and Västerbottens-Kuriren.
