Dom som är kvar (Those Left Behind) has been named the best Swedish picture book of the year 2014, and was honoured with the national award Snöbollen (The Snowball).
The jury’s decision: ”First-time author Karin Saler and illustrator Siri Ahmed Backström break new ground in Dom som är kvar by showing how a grieving family slowly find their way back to the everyday. Without grand gestures, drawing on an accomplished textual and visual collaboration, they portray the disorientation and emptiness of grief while also showing us what the first signs of life beyond sorrow might look like. A touching and important picture book that grows with every reading.”
The prize is an initiative by the association Krumelur - Association for Young Words in the North, in cooperation with Umeå Kultur, Kulturföreningen Pilgatan, Bildmuseet, Umeå University, the county library of Västerbotten, Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival, Mid Sweden University and the Association of Swedish Illustrators and Graphic Designers.
