Skierri – Land of the Dwarf Birches
Markku Lehmuskallio
Finland/Sweden, 1982
Languages: Sami, Finnish
Subtitles: English
Original title: Skierri, vaivaiskoivujen maa
Duration: 1 h 58 min
The film takes us to the northernmost part of Finnish Lapland, near the Three-Country Cairn, and follows the people who live and make their livelihood there. It also depicts the encounter—and clash—between two cultures: the Sami and the Finnish. Sami traditions and customary law are set against Finnish legislation, personified by the film’s two main characters: the sheriff and the Sami man Niila.

The screening is part of the program accompanying Bildmuseet’s exhibition Art and Truth-Telling, on view on Level 3. The pan-Sami group Avant Joik refers to the film Skierri in their work Can We Reconcile?
