In this performance one wardrobe of discarded textiles resurrects carrying stories, images and memories to be shed, reclaimed and reimagined by others. Identity relates to clothing as a social language. Witness the fluidity of the self through dressing up, forming bodies and creating individualities, culminating in a chorus of voices, a monologue, or dialogues?
Jan van Esch, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is a multi-media artist and curator whose practice spans performance, drawing, curating and social engagement. With a background in social and health sciences and international development aid, Jan’s work questions processes of “giving” by exploring the subconscious psychological motives and power dynamics between giver and receiver.
Jan van Esch is an IASPIS residency artist in Umeå during autumn 2026.
