Eva Lindström's Apan och jag [Monkey and I] have been named 2011's best Swedish picture book. The original pictures for the book are now presented in an exhibition at Bildmuseet.
In Apan och jag, Eva Lindström tells a simple but clever story that contains both humour and strong emotions around breakups, anxiety and reunion.The text is written in tranquil rhyme, and the use of colour alternate between the pallor of everyday craziness and the hotter colouring of the rising emotions when jealous fantasies take shape. Eva Lindström develops her narrative in interaction with the reader, who always is kept aware of the real course of events by clues in the pictures.
The prize is an initiative by the association Krumelur - Association for Young Words in the North, in cooperation with Umeå Kultur, Kulturföreningen Pilgatan, Bildmuseet, Umeå University, the county library of Västerbotten, Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival, Mid Sweden University and the Association of Swedish Illustrators and Graphic Designers.
