Theatrical Fields

2013-09-29 - 2014-01-05

Theatrical Fields examines the theatrical dimension within performance, film and video. The exhibition displays art that uses the language and expression of the theatre, and that breaks up the linear narrative in order to give scope for more complex perspectives.

The exhibition features video installations by Judith Barry (USA), Stan Douglas (Canada), Marcel Dzama (Canada), Joan Jonas (USA), Isaac Julien (UK) and Constanze Ruhm (Austria).

The exhibition also includes a  programme with films of Marie Louise Ekman (Sweden), Eva Meyer/Eran Schaerf (Germany) and Ulrike Ottinger (Germany) that are screened during evenings and weekends with the artists in attendance. Artist Joan Jonas delivers her performance Reanimation in collaboration with jazz pianist Jason Moran. There are also open talks by artists and researchers. The way in which the exhibited art work has drawn inspiration from theatre, as well as theatre's significance for contemporary art and art theory, is discussed during two whole-day events that offer open lectures by artists and researchers.

Theatrical Fields is produced by Bildmuseet and curated by  Ute Meta Bauer. Assistant curator:  Anca Rujoiu.
